IRS Plans Jan 30 Tax Season Opening

The IRS plans to open the 2013 filing season for individual income tax returns on January 30 following the tax law changes enacted by Congress under the American Taxpayer Relief Act.

More than 120 million households should be able to start filing tax returns starting on this date regardless of whether they file electronically or on paper.  The IRS stated they will not process paper tax returns prior to this anticipated date. Taxpayers are also encouraged to file electronically with direct deposit if a refund is expected,as this process produces a much faster result.

The remaining households who file more complex returns that include but are not limited to, residential energy credits, depreciation and amortization, general business credits or mortgage interest credit, can expect to start filing in late February or into March due to the need for more extensive form and software changes.  A specific date will be announced in the near future.
